When we kimono tailors make a kimono, we don't cut off the fabric, leave them with the seam allowance. It means that the seams can be undone and the fabric can be returned to its original state. From there, we can make a new kimono again, which is more sustainable than Western clothes.
However, the production of kimonos is decreasing year by year and the number of craftspeople is also thought to be decreasing.
In that way, the industry cannot be said to be sustainable. As tailoring a kimono is a bit expensive, it's also a good idea to buy second-hand kimonos, and wear them with care and alterations. Because there're also craftspeople specializing in the care and repair of kimonos, called "Shinkai".
